Ancients Professor Scott Kelly Tran 08/28/2013 Who Am I?

I am a young girl with all the stereotypical Asian features: black hair, black eyes, flat nose, tan skin, and everything else you would expect. Growing up in Vietnam, I have family that takes very seriously the practice of the Five Constant Virtues of Confucianism, which are benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity. It does not sound any fun, does it? The more I grow up, the more I stay true to my Confucian self: doing good deeds, acting rationally, respecting my parents and teachers, prioritizing education, and living with my faith. I wholeheartedly believe that Confucianism has strongly shaped the person I am. Two years ago I first came to America. Living in the country of multiculturalism, I experience the new adventures and lifestyles. I get to know more people and their perspectives. I become more courageous and unafraid of challenges. I am much openminded despite my Confucian traditions. I learn to become a good leader, which really motivates me to go beyond my comfort zone and to reach my full potential. I start to think that studying can be fun. I dare to dream bigger and work harder to make that dream come true. I finally realize that the Five Constant Virtues does not fully define who I am. So who am I? Perhaps a Confucian in the U.S!
