AN EVALUATION OF THE PERFORMANCE OF GALVILITE GALVANIZING REPAIR COMPOUND AS WELDING REPAIR PER ASTM A 780 ON G90 HOT-DIP GALVANIZED STEEL IN 5% SALT SPRAY

Date: March 4, 2009

Report No. 001081-2

ZRC Worldwide

-2

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Galvilite Galvanizing Repair Compound, as manufactured by ZRC Worldwide, Marshfield, MA, has been tested in salt spray for its ability to protect welded areas of G90 hot-dip galvanized steel surfaces from corrosion, after application according to ASTM A-780, Standard Practice for Repair of Damaged and Uncoated Areas of Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings. The results of this evaluation illustrate that Galvilite Galvanizing Repair Compound affords outstanding protection against corrosion to welded and/or damaged areas of G90 hot-dip galvanized steel. Figure 2 shows the condition of the Galvilite Galvanizing Repair Compound coated test piece after 2000 hours of ASTM B117 Salt Fog Testing. Figure 1 shows the galvanized control test piece without Galvilite applied.

Figure 2 Showing test piece with Galvilite applied after 2000 hours ASTM B 117 Salt Fog Testing.

Report No. 001081-2

ZRC Worldwide

OBJECT OF STUDY: To evaluate the use of Galvilite Galvanizing Repair Compound as a repair compound for welded areas on G90 specified hot-dip galvanized steel in 5% salt spray as defined in ASTM B 117. PROCEDURES: In this experiment, 11 gauge panels of G90 specified hot-dip galvanized steel (ASTM A 526) were obtained from Ledford Steel Company, Winchester, KY and employed as the substrate. Two panels of the substrate were MIG-welded together to create the test area. Figure 3 shows the test piece after welding. The welded area was then Power Tool Cleaned (SSPC-SP 11). The surrounding area was Hand Tool Cleaned (SSPC-SP 2). The surface of the whole test piece was then Solvent Cleaned (SSPC-SP 1) using MEK. Figure 4 illustrates the test piece after cleaning.

Figure 3 Showing a representative test piece after MIG welding.

Figure 4 Showing Galvilite test piece after surface preparation.

Report No. 001081-2

ZRC Worldwide

Two coats of Galvilite were applied from a randomly chosen can (after stirring) by brush to a total dry film thickness of 3.6 mils (recorded with a Positector 6000 series magnetic film thickness gauge, per SSPC-PA 2), allowing a 24-hour dry time at 25C between coats. ZRC was overlapped 1.5 inches over the galvanized surface on either side of the weld. Figure 5 shows the panel after Galvilite application.

Figure 5 Showing test piece after application of Galvilite.

The above substrate preparation and coating application was done according to the requirements of ASTM A 780, Standard Practice for Repair of Damaged and Uncoated Areas of Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings. The test piece was allowed two weeks to dry under laboratory conditions (25C, 50% relative humidity), before being exposed to 5% salt spray as per ASTM B 117 for 2000 hours, after which time the test was terminated, the test piece visually inspected and corrosion and blistering resistance evaluated using ASTM D 610 and ASTM D 714, respectively. DATA: Figure 1 shows the condition of our control test piece, which received no surface preparation before testing. After 2000 hours of salt fog testing, it has formed copious amounts of zinc salt on its surface as a result of the galvanic reaction caused when zinc sacrifices itself to protect the underlying substrate. However, it has also begun to exhibit a significant amount of red rust across its surface, ASTM D 610 Rust Grade 2-G. The weld itself is totally corroded.

Report No. 001081-2

ZRC Worldwide

Figure 2 shows the condition of the Galvilite Galvanizing Repair Compound coated test piece. On the uncoated area of the hot-dip galvanizing, similar to the control test piece, this panel has also formed copious amounts of zinc salt, accompanied by red rust, ASTM D 610 Rust Grade 2-G. However, where Galvilite has been applied to the weld and surrounding area, there is no rust, only light formation of zinc hydroxycarbonate salt, typical of bonafide zinc rich coatings. The weld shows no corrosion at all. No blistering was observed on the weld itself and the surrounding area where the galvanizing had been removed. However, llight blistering was observed where Galvilite was applied over the hot-dip galvanizing, ASTM D 714 4-MD.

Figure 1 Showing the control test piece after 2000 hours ASTM B 117 Salt Fog Testing.

Figure 2 Showing test piece with Galvilite applied after 2000 hours ASTM B 117 Salt Fog Testing.

ZRC Worldwide

CONCLUSION: The results of this evaluation illustrate that Galvilite Galvanizing Repair Compound, when applied according to ASTM A 780, Standard Practice for Repair of Damaged and Uncoated Areas of Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings, affords outstanding protection against corrosion to welded and/or damaged areas of G90 hot-dip galvanized steel. Prepared and Respectfully Submitted,

Steven P. Collins Vice-president

DO NOT USE WATER! Combustion in a limited amount of air can generate toxic Carbon Monoxide. Use full protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus for respiratory protection in fighting fires in enclosures. In a fire situation or when the material is heated, it becomes a highly flammable liquid with a moderate explosion hazard. Once ignited, this product will burn readily in air. Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: Keep containers closed tightly. Isolate from heat, electrical equipment, sparks and open flame. Closed containers may explode when exposed to extreme heat. Zinc and aluminum present in a finely divided form are hazardous when atomized in air and, if sparked, explosion is possible. Application to hot surfaces requires special precautions. During emergency conditions, overexposure to decomposition products (gaseous oxides of Carbon and Nitrogen) may cause health hazard. Symptoms may not be immediately apparent. Obtain medical attention. Heavier than air vapors may flow along surfaces to distant ignition sources and flash back. Moisture and acid contamination can result in Hydrogen gas evolution, causing cans to bulge with increased pressure. Cans so deformed should not be moved, opened or punctured. Call (617) 328-6700. See also Sections 4 and 5. Special Fire Fighting Procedures: DO NOT USE WATER IN ANY FORM. Water may be used to cool closed containers to prevent pressure build-up and possible autoignition or explosion when exposed to extreme heat, but care should be taken to prevent water access to wet paint and spray residues. See also Section 7.

SECTION 6 SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Personal Protective Equipment: Gloves: Neoprene gloves and aprons should be used to prevent prolonged or repeated skin contact. Use protective creams when skin contact is likely. Respirator: In outdoor or open areas, wear only properly fitted, NIOSH/MSHA approved respirators capable of filtering dust particulates during and after application unless air monitoring demonstrates vapor/mist levels are below acceptable limits. In areas of restricted ventilation, wear only properly fitted, NIOSH/MSHA approved respirators designed to remove a combination of organic vapors and dust particulates during and after application unless air monitoring demonstrates vapor/mist levels are below acceptable limits. In confined areas, use approved air line type respirators or hoods. Follow respirator manufacturer's directions for respirator use. Eye: Safety goggles with unperforated side shields or face shield should be used where splashing into eyes is possible. An eye wash fountain should also be available in areas where splashing is possible. When large amounts of material are used, a safety shower should be available. Footwear: Wear chemical resistant boots with steel toes. Clothing: Wear neoprene apron over well fitting clothes. Loose fitting clothes should not be worn. Remove and wash or discard contaminated clothing. Ventilation Engineering Controls: Work place areas require exhaust ventilation in accordance with OSHA regulation 29 CFR Part 1910.107d to maintain vapor levels below the TLV (especially during spraying, misting or heating). Use an approved high efficiency respirator of the full face canister type (for limited time and concentrations), air supplied type of self-contained respirators (for extended exposures involving high or unknown vapor concentrations or for non-routine or emergency conditions). Exhaust levels should be maintained at least at 100 lfm. All ventilation equipment should be explosion-proof, and any tools used in the area should be of the non-sparking type.

SECTION 7 SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Leak and Spill Procedure: For massive spills, evacuate the area. For all spills, eliminate ignition sources. Dike and contain spills with dry, inert materials (sand, earth, etc.). Eliminate all sources of moisture and do not use water in clean-up operations. Recover as much of the free liquid as possible for disposal and use an absorbent to pick up the residue. Avoid discharging paint directly into a sewer or surface waters. Do not flush spills with water. Use non-sparking tools only. Spilled material may be slippery on floors. Waste Disposal: Dispose of the absorbed material or the free waste liquid in dry containers according to Local, State and Federal regulations for Hazardous Wastes. Dispose of all materials including empty cans according to Local, State and Federal regulations. Do not incinerate. Do not flush into sewers. Containers may explode if heated even when empty. It is recommended that solid waste be landfilled only at approved hazardous disposal sites using approved contractors. Handling Procedures and Equipment: Electrically interconnect and ground containers for transfer of liquids to avoid fire caused by static discharge. Use only nonsparking tools. Areas of use should have good ventilation and all sources of open flame and high heat should be excluded. Prohibit smoking in these areas. Ensure sufficient ventilation to prevent accumulation of heavy vapors in low lying areas of sumps. Material is electrically conductive. Do not apply by electrostatic spray equipment unless equipment has been designed for use with such coatings by the equipment manufacturer. Storage Requirements: This combustible liquid should be stored in a cool, clean, dry, well-ventilated, fire resistant storage room or in a solvent storage cabinet that meets OSHA requirements. Store only in totally closed cans with identifying labels that indicate the flammability of the material. Store large quantities only in buildings in compliance with OSHA 1910.105. Areas of storage for this material should have good ventilation and all sources of open flame and high heat should be excluded. Prohibit smoking in these areas. Ensure sufficient ventilation to prevent accumulation of heavy vapors in low lying areas or sumps. Do not store above 40 C. Do not puncture, drag or slide container. Other Precautions: Any deformed cans should not be moved, opened or punctured. Call (781) 319-0400. Do not take internally. Keep away from children. Empty container may contain extremely flammable residues and explode if heated.
