Anthony, Helen Keller, Jackie Robinson, and Martin Luther King, Jr. as Americans whose contributions improved the lives of other Americans. Students will know that Jackie Robinson was an important famous American. Students will understand improved the lives of other Americans. Students will be able to explain how they have a similar characteristic to Jackie Robinson Materials: Two blank storyboards per student A Picture Book of Jackie Robinson Procedure: 1. Ask students what they know about Jackie Robinson. Who was Jackie Robinson? Why is Jackie Robinson famous? 2. Read A Picture Book of Jackie Robinson 3. Discuss the story with students. What did you learn about Jackie Robinson? 4. Ask students what happened at the beginning of the story, middle, and end. 5. Ask students what characteristics describe Jackie Robinson. Ask when Jackie Robinson displayed that characteristic. Write down the list of characteristics for students to see. 6. Do you think more things happened in Jackie Robinsons life not discussed in this book? Talk about sometimes we tell stories and omit details or add details. 7. What characteristics did Jackie Robinson have in common with other famous Americans? Could Jackie Robinson have been friends with George Washington? Abraham Lincoln? 8. Narrow down the list to three characteristics. 9. Model how to do the first storyboard about a famous Americans characteristic. Go through the steps to write and draw the pictures of the storyboard. 10. Show students that they first need to pick a characteristic about the person. Have students write their characteristic at the top of the page so they do not forget. 11. After modeling, students will create their first storyboard about a characteristic the famous American possesses. Have students write down their ideas then draw the pictures. 12. After, we will talk about a time we displayed that characteristic. Students will create their second storyboard about the time they showed that characteristic. Assessment: Summative: Storyboards will be collected to assess knowledge and comprehension about Jackie Robinson Formal: The Post-Test will occur at the end of the unit.
