BRIEF OVERVIEW OF COURSE: The course is designed to give electrical engineering students understanding and learning of high voltage techniques, the behaviour of insulating materials under the stress of high electrical voltage and the ability to test them electrically for forming high voltage equipments and insulation systems, generation and measurements of high AC, DC and impulse voltages and currents and their circuits, sphere and uniform field gaps. Electrical breakdown in gasses, liquid and solid, Townsends breakdown criterion, Paschens law, Streamer mechanisms, breakdown in non-uniform field and corona, electrical break down of dielectric liquids and solids, insulating materials are also covered. COURSE OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Having successfully completed the module, the students will demonstrate general skills in high voltage engineering and be able to describe and explain: 1. 2. 3. 4. Generation of impulse, dc and ac high voltages. Breakdown mechanisms of solids, liquids and gases. Partial discharges and their measurement techniques. Range of techniques to measure different types of high voltages.

5. Application of solid, liquid and gas insulation for arrange of high voltage apparatus. 6. The concept of insulation coordination. 7. The technique of measuring different types of high voltages. 8. Choosing the right surge device to eliminate over voltages of high voltage apparatus. METHODS OF LECTURE DELIVERY 1. Lectures will be delivered with aid of multimedia power point presentations. 2. Static presentation: use of white board and makers. COURSE OUTLINE Introduction to high voltage and methods of generation: 1 Week Briefly introduce power generation, transmission and distribution and discuss various voltage levels. Generation of High Voltages and Currents: 2-3 Weeks Generation of high DC voltages: Voltage multipliers. Van-de-Graff generators. Generation of high AC voltages: cascaded transformers and Tesla coil. Impulse voltages and currents. Control of Impulse generators. Breakdown Phenomena: 4-6 Weeks Breakdown in electronegative gases. Time lags for breakdown. Streamer theory of breakdown. Paschen's law. Breakdown in non-uniform fields and corona discharges. Conduction and breakdown in liquids. Breakdown in solid dielectrics: intrinsic breakdown, thermal breakdown and electromechanical breakdown. High Voltage Measurement: 7-9 Weeks Measurement of D.C. resistivity. Dielectric constant and loss factor. Partial discharge measurement. Testing: 10 12 Weeks Testing of insulators and bushings. Testing of cables, circuit breakers, transformers and surge diverters. Radio interference measurements. Over voltage Phenomenon and Insulating Coordination: 13 15 Weeks Lightning and switching surges. Basic insulation level. Surge diverters and arresters. Principles of insulation coordination on high voltage and extra high voltage power systems.

GROUND RULES AND REGULATION: Absolute concentration is required of all students during lectures. Tutorial work book must be submitted at an agreed date and time. Penalties exist for late coming to class and submission of tutorial work TOPICS FOR TERM PAPERS /ASSIGNMENTS/STUDENTS ACTIVITIES: Assignments will be given at the end of each module and students are expected to participate and make contributuions during lectures.
