Alliteration

Repeating of a consonant sound.

Allies are awesome. An amazing alligator ate an ape.

Hyperbole

Extreme exaggeration.

He is a mammoth!

Repetition

The repeating of any sounds, words, phases, or sentences.


Abbott: Who is on first.

Costello: Well, what are you askin' me for? Abbott: I'm not asking you--I'm telling you. Who is on first. Costello: I'm asking you--who's on first? Abbott: That's the man's name. Costello: That's who's name? Abbott: Yes.

Onomatopoeia

The use of a word to describe or imitate a natural sound or the sound made by an object or an action.

The choo choo chugged along the track.

Personification

Giving human characteristics to animals or objects.


Im slyer than you!

The dog thought he was slyer than a fox when he stole the bacon.

Metaphor

Saying something is something else.

He is a snail.

Simile

Comparing two things using like or as.

She was as fast as the wind.

Idiom

An expression that the meaning cannot be understood by the individual words or elements.

Now youve let the cat out of the bag!

Go Figure: A Figurative Story


The day was as hot as the blazing sun! The ground was a frying pan. The sun was nearly touching the earth. The clouds refused to show their faces. It was a blazing, battering, blinding day. We asked whether the weather would change. Crackles of thunder made us think it could start raining cats and dogs anytime!
