Equity - Nine Types of Accommodations and Modifications

Quantity - Quantity accommodations and modifications include reducing the amount of homework, reducing the number of test questions or reducing the number of possible test answers for learning disabled students. Time Time accommodations and modifications include increasing the amount of time for assignments or tests for learning disabled students. Level of Support Level of support accommodations and modifications include use of the textbook during tests, use of computers or interpreters, or note takers, or the use of educational aides to assist physically disabled or learning disabled students. Input - Input accommodations and modifications include reading the text aloud, enlarging the text, using concrete, hands-on examples, or pre-teaching key concepts to physically disabled or learning disabled students. Difficulty Difficulty accommodations and modifications include removing essay questions from tests, accepting dictation, simplifying task directions or allowing the use of calculators for physically or learning disabled students. Output Output accommodations and modifications include allowing verbal answers in lieu of written ones, allowing submission of drawings or pictures in lieu of written papers or use of hands-on projects for physically or learning disabled students. Participation Participation Accommodations and modifications include having the learning disabled student assist the teacher, having the disabled student lead a small group or limiting the students involvement in a task. Alternative Goals Alternative goal modifications include adapting lesson goals but using the same material such as having the learning disabled student identify state colors from a map while other students identify state capitals. Substitute Curriculum Substitute Curriculum modifications means providing different instruction and materials to meet a disabled students needs.
