51 b3C Objective: TLW describe how a writers choice of language affects the audience. Date: March 2, 2014 Grade Level: Middle School 2. Big Understanding: Critical reading impacts our view of the world and enables us to recognize the writers intent.

3. Assessment Evidence: Students will be able to identify types of words that relate to certain genre, i.e. horror, humor, classical, based on excerpts from select authors. 4. Opening Hook: Teacher will read an excerpt and ask what type of work the excerpt comes from and why. 5. Instructional Strategies/Student Activities: Input: Students will receive sheets with excerpts upon them. Modification/Accommodation: Poetry used in this class may be pre-recorded for the hearing impaired. Modeling: Read one passage, identify what sorts of vocabulary gives away the type of writing and why. Guided Practice: Students will be given a passage and allowed to discuss it before identifying it and stating why. CFU: Ask students what sort of language indicates what sort of work. Independent Practice: Students will identify the types of books on their reading list after reading the first chapter. 6. Materials/Resources: Pencil, handout sheets, whiteboard, overhead projector. 7. Grouping Patterns: Four groups of four and one group of three. 8. Ending, Summary/Reflection: Ask students for a specific word that would fit a specific genre. 9. Technology: Whiteboard, overhead projector. Poetry pre-recorded for hearing impaired.
