Through the use of imagery in Conan Doyles text, Holmes eccentric character becomes apparent to the audience. In Chapter 1, Watson narrates Holmes actions of sedating himself with seven-percentile-solution of cocaine. Watson describes the scene as Sherlock Holmes took his bottle from the corner of the mantel piece and his hypodermic syringe from his morocco case. With his long, white, nervous fingers he adjusted the delicate needle and rolled back his left shirtcuff. For some little time his eyes rested thoughtfully upon the sinewy forearm and wrist, all dotted and scarred with innumerable puncture-marks. Finally, he thrust the sharp point home, pressed down the tiny piston, and sank back into the velvet-lined armchair with a long sigh of satisfaction.(Conan Doyle 1) The incorporated imagery allows the readers to visualize Holmes in action, allowing the audience to be in the scene, observing everything as if it were occurring in the moment right in front of them. Holmes is introduced to the audience as a drug addict who goes to the extent of hurting his body to reach the mental exhalation he claims that he needs. Holmes use of cocaine for satisfaction is one the aspects of his character that distinguishes him from the police detectives of that time. Having a background image of what Holmes looks like and what he does allows the audience to engage more with the evolvement of his character and what is learned about him and what he does when not solving a case.
