Beginning Today we are going on an adventure through a volcano, does anyone know what is
Opening Statement inside of a volcano? It is called lava and thats what our carpet area is going to be. Dont worry about stepping on it though because we have blue stepping stones to get across. You each will get a bean bag that will save you if any of these disks turn red during the game. When a disk turns red you can throw the bean bag on it to make it safe (blue) to walk on again, or You can take another way across the lava to the other side.
Middle
What will children do Earlier Jump from one row to another Take a bee line approach walk in a group Middle Follow the disk paths more consistently Try to throw their bean bag On disks further away Later May split up their group Try another route instead of using their bean bag
Strategies: How will you scaffold their learning? Have them follow you for a round
Strategies: Develop a story of why they Want to get to the other side Have them come back to the beginning on the paths
End
transition to next part of routine We will have two more groups make the trip across the lava before each group finds their way to table tops for lunch
Follow-up Ideas
Have a back-pack and have the students find items around the room that they would use on a trip across a volcano instead of bean bags.
