ANNOTATIONS TP-CAS You must mark up (annotate) the poem to show your thought process. Do not just underline key lines what devices do you see? What is significant about the line? Label the devices correctly and make note of what the device is doing.

THESIS You must specifically name the device(s) and what it is doing to establish meaning in the poem. You must mention the name of the poem and the author. Do not summarize the poem; explain the larger ideas/implications of the poem.

SHIFTS

When studying poetry, recognizing pattern is important. Mostly, the pattern is important to note because you need to see what happens when the poet breaks that pattern.

When the pattern breaks, what is being emphasized, subverted, reorganized?

Shakespeares Sonnets
Thematically, the sonnets represent one large shift. Shakespeare addressed 1-126 to a young male lover, while 127-154 address a mysterious woman, his dark Lady.
