DUE Tuesday, 3/18 1. In the workbook, complete exercise 16-1A (pg. 135). Skip all examples in alto/tenor (C) clefs. For nos. 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12, you only need to spell the V chord that is tonicizing the key without adding the 7th. Weve discussed secondary dominants as dominant 7th chords (4 notes) but they can also be a triad. So if you are spelling a V6/V, you are spelling a triad in first inversion (V6) that is tonicizing V. o Example: V/V in C major = D F# A. If you spell this chord in first inversion, its a V6/V (F# A D). If youre confused, consult Chapter 16 in the book for clarification.

2. In the workbook, complete exercise 16-2A, #1, 2 & 4 (pg. 137 & 139). Read the instructions below carefully some of the tasks in the workbook you do not need to complete. For all three examples, identify whether the chord is diatonic (use chart 1) or chromatic (use chart 2). All chromatic chords will be secondary doms. #1: This excerpt is in F minor, NOT C minor, so Db is a diatonic pitch. Write Roman Numerals and label NCTs. #2: Label the chords with Roman Numerals. You need only write one roman numeral for each bass note that changes (for instance, measure 3 should be have only one roman numeral). Well identify the sequences in class. #4: Only label Roman Numerals (no need to label NCTs!). As in #2, write a Roman Numeral only when the chord changes (look for a change of a low bass note). Most measures will have one chord per measure, but some will have changes of bass (second system) in the middle of the bar.
