-iscontinuous Transmission 2-T34 is a mechanism. which allows the radio transmitter to be switched off most of the time during speech pauses for the following two purposes:

-T3 in uplin9 shall be in operation within the 0!= =!. if commanded so by the networ9. see 0!= #).#5. The =! shall handle -T3 in downlin9 at any time. regardless. whether -T3 in uplin9 is commanded or not.

The o%erall -T3 mechanism described in the present document reCuires the following functions: > > > a Aoice $cti%ity -etector 2A$-4 on the transmit 2T34 sideG e%aluation of the bac9ground acoustic noise on the transmit 2T34 side. in order to transmit characteristic parameters to the recei%e 2(34 sideG generation on the recei%e 2(34 side of a similar noise. called comfort noise. during periods where the radio transmission is switched off.

The Aoice $cti%ity -etector 2A$-4 is defined in 0!= #/.6) and the comfort noise functions in 0!= #/.6". ?oth are based partly on the speech transcoder and its internal %ariables. defined in 0!= #/.6#. In addition to these functions. if the parameters arri%ing at the (3 side are detected to be seriously corrupted by errors. the speech or comfort noise must be generated from substituted data in order to a%oid seriously annoying effects for the listener. This function is defined in 0!= #/.6+. $n o%erall description of the speech processing parts can be found in 0!= #/.1+. The description for Tandem *ree Operation is gi%en in 0!= #5./".

T3ITJP H KNOI-$T$L indicates that the Information ?it and &odec =ode fields do not contain any useful data 2and shall not be transmitted o%er the air interface4.
