Flute sectional and Band on Parade

Objective(s): After the sectional, the flute players (in middle school and High School) will be warmed-up and ready to play with the full ensemble. They will be able to use proper breath support and demonstrate proper posture/pedagogy specific to flute. The students will be able to pass melodic figures more successfully and have an altogether tighter ensemble sound by the end of the lesson. Body: FOR FLUTE SECTIONAL (MS) Begin with breathing exercise (Darth vader) o Put hand in front of mouth and inhale 4 exhale 4 o The sound should be low, like darth vader o This allows the students to feel and hear the air and air quality that they are taking in Utilizing the breath that we established with Darth Vader, play the B flat concert scale in unison, then in a round with the three of them Discuss embouchure Ask them questions pertaining to specific flute pedagogy *Demonstrate on your instrument* Touch lightly on Band on Parade if time FOR BAND ON PARADE Begin at mm. 21 Play all the way until the first note of 26 Listen to see if students are trading the melodic figures If not TELL THEM/Demonstrate (vocal modeling) Go back to mm. 13 and put that in context Skip ahead to mm. 37 the same concept applies here with trading melodic figures as well

Go back to 13 and put this in context From 13 to the end for retention (if time) FOR FLUTE SECTIONAL (HS) Work on Patapan Go directly to spots that are the most tricky as far as fingering/rhythm goes Check for balance within the section Discuss flute pedagogy when applicable

Evaluation: Tell the students to evaluate themselves and do frequent positive reinforcement to embed this lesson into something concrete Have the students take 5 seconds to think of what they did awesome, and what they could improve upon. Reps! Closure: By the end of my teaching session, the flute players (in middle school and High School) will be warmed-up and ready to play with the full ensemble.
