The following are books I would recommend for 2014 first year student s, The Other, The Bond and When the Emperor Was Divine. The books suggested here open discussions and start conversations for first year students The Bond was on Paine Colleges freshman list, The Other was referenced by the Huffington post as being a good read for first year college and is also on Florida States First Year shared reading and When the Emperor was Divine was on the summer reading for Cornell University. Other shows how you can rise above all social and economic issues and reach your goals if you put your mind to it. Finally, When The Emperor Was Divine is a great historical account of what went on in the US during WWII which I feel is not a story told in schools and should be. These books are all part of FGCUs mission to making students become informed and engaged through a reading experience as a group.
