First of the Light Rail Trains Arrive

According to a Hampton Roads Transit press release the
first of nine trains for The Tide light rail system arrived in
Hampton Roads late on October 5. Covered in blue
protective shrink wrap, the trains were held overnight in a
freight yard and then moved onto the Sewell’s Point line
for delivery to the new light rail line in Norfolk.

The trains are currently being stored on the tracks near Norfolk State University. They
will be guarded 24 hours a day while construction continues on the vehicle maintenance
and storage facility which will be completed in 2010. Later this year, all nine light rail
vehicles will be in Norfolk.

Residents should note that the trains may be seen moving along the lines as they
undergo a series of static and dynamic tests in the months to come before revenue
service begins. They will also be moved periodically as system construction proceeds.
Track safety regulations prohibit walking along the tracks and the space is restricted so
all residents should refrain from moving in the area.
