Celebrating Womens History Month Womens History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as Womens History Week." Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as "Womens History Week." In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Womens History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100 9 which designated the month of March as Womens History Month." Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Womens History Month. Since 1995, Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as Womens History Month. It is important to recognize the contributions that women have made in the past and to note their finger prints on the future. It has been said that, The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. Towards that note, it was women who began the first Parent Teacher Associations throughout our country. Our nations history is replete with women who have served as classroom teachers from infancy to the collegiate ranks. Today at Rippling Woods, women make-up over 90% of our staff, serving as teachers, administrative and instructional support, as well as custodial and cafeteria staff. Every day, I witness these women at our school making decisions that will shape the future of Glen Burnie, Maryland and our Nation. So, we celebrate the women in the community and society for making a difference. I celebrate my mom, Jacqueline Powell, for planting the spirit of service in me. And to Grandma, Clara Quash, who taught my family to pull together and to stay together. I also celebrate Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Astronaut Sally Ride, Athlete Wilma Rudolph, Activist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Author Julia Alvarez, Suffragist Alice Paul, Abolitionist Harriet Tubman, Activist Myrtilla Minor, Aviator Amelia Earhart, Artist Frida Kahlo, Activist Rosa Parks and many, many more. Please take a moment to go to the library to read and reflect on the accomplishments of the many dynamic women who helped to shape our country and transform life as we know it today. Much of the information in this article was adopted from the Law Library of Congress' guide to the legislative history of Women's History Month. Visit this online site for more information: http:// womenshistorymonth.gov/. Join me in taking the time to thank those special women who have made a difference. Yours in Service, Michael Powell .

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission at Rippling Woods Elementary School is to promote a safe, caring and rigorous environment that empowers students to achieve excellence and become independent, life-long learners both in the classroom and the community.

Assistant Principals Message

Two-hour delays, early dismissals, snow days, and professional development days have caused numerous disruptions to our regular routine and schedule. Many times, students do not adapt well to these changes, and as a result, we have seen an increase in students with behavior concerns. These negative behaviors have been occurring at the bus stop, on the school bus, and within the school. As part of our PBIS initiatives and 3-Rs (Respect, Responsibility, and Readiness to Learn), I ask that you take some time to review appropriate behaviors and school expectations. One specific area of concern is students keeping their hands and feet to themselves. This accounts for approximately 90% of discipline and office referrals. Please help us teach students that we do not touch, kick, hit, push, etc. And, it is never acceptable to push back, for example, if someone pushes them first. When a student has a problem, the appropriate steps to a solution include 1. Ask the person to please stop (name calling, teasing) 2. Move away from the person if the behavior continues 3. Tell the closest adult if the behavior continues (bus driver, teacher, lunch monitor) Following these three simple steps will help students be part of the solution and real world problem solvers. Thank you for your support. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to refer to Student-Parent Handbook or to contact me at BGruber@aacps.org.

COUNSELORS CORNER

Ms. McKain, School Counselor

Because we have had some concerns brought to our attention about student use of social media outside of school, I am bringing parents attention to the Anne Arundel County School Policies regarding Social Media. To find the complete reading of the policies, you can go to the AACPS website (www.aacps.org) and on the front page of the website, there is a bar near the top which lists different categories; go to the drop-down menu under Board of Education and choose Board Policies/Regulations; from this listing, look for Student Use of Social Media at Administrative Regulation (just below the section numbered 902.03). Here are a few of the highlights from this Board Policy: Student misuse of social media, whether on or off school grounds, when it creates a hostile, disruptive, or unsafe learning environment, is unacceptable. Misuse of Social Media Whether on or off school grounds, the use of social media in a manner that demeans, condemns or berates others, including students and staff, incites violence of any kind, embarrasses, defames, harasses or bullies others, including students and staff (as harass and bully are defined by Regulation JCCA-RA - Bullying/Cyber-bullying/Harassment and Intimidation/Hazing/Bias Behavior), or in any manner violates the Code of Conduct, Board Policy or other regulation, or other local, state or federal laws. Student misuse of social media which has a negative and/or severe impact on a school learning environment, or risks the safety of staff and students shall be addressed by AACPS under this regulation. Moreover, student use of social media off school grounds having a nexus to, or having an impact on the normal operations of a school, learning environments, or the safety of students or staff, shall be addressed by AACPS under this regulation. When a staff member becomes aware of an incident that involves the misuse of social media, the staff member shall immediately report the incident to a school administrator who will notify the Office of Investigations, unless the incident involves the safety or security of a student or staff member, in which case the Office of School Security will be called.

Pre-K & Kindergarten Conferences Pre-K & Kindergarten Conferences will be held in May this year. The scheduled dates are May 22nd & 23rd for K. and May 21st, 22nd and 23rd for Pre-K.

Message from the Reading Office Mrs. Heflin &Mrs. Steele

Celebration of Dr. Seuss Day/Read Across America Coming soon... Rippling Woods students will celebrate Dr. Seuss Day by participating in a variety of activities , such as Buddy Reading. At this time, the older students will read several books to the younger students. The special Guest Readers will be the Old Mill High School Football players and Cheerleaders, and several family members and friends of our students and staff. Everyone will enjoy the Dr. Seuss celebration! BOWIE BAYSOX READ and HIT a HOME RUN READING PROGRAM! All students in grades PK-5 should complete their Read and Hit a Home Run classroom reading sheet by Friday, April 4th. The students that read 4 books will receive one free ticket to the Baysox Game on Saturday, May 10 at 6:35 PM. A letter was sent home notifying families about ordering discounted tickets for the game. Students should be present for the ceremonial parade on the field by 5:50PM. There will be fireworks at the conclusion of the game. This event will be a lot of fun, so we encourage students and their families to attend! Helping Your Child Read Effectively CHOOSING A BOOK 1. Too Easy: Ask your child to select a book and read. If two or three pages can be read without mistakes, ask the child to find a more challenging book to read.

2. Too Hard: If the child makes three mistakes per page, it may be too difficult and frustrating. Find an easier book
for your child to read. HOWEVER, if the story and ideas seem very interesting to him/her, dont worry about the number of words not understood or recognized. 3. Just Right: Ask your child to read silently for several pages, and then ask, Please explain what you have just read. If your child can give you a brief idea of what the story is about, then he/she is reading and understanding the materials. If the child cannot understand or recall the story, then you know he/she has poor reading comprehension.
