Independent Variable: Variety of watermelon. Dependent Variable: Amount of air being pumped into the watermelons. Control Variables: The experiment should be tested with all of the watermelon in the same temperature and humidity controlled room, with all of the watermelon being the same temperature. They should also be at the same elevation (ex: all on the same tableall on the floor etc. . The air flow to the fruit should remain constant as well. Equipment: !ne "ugar #aby watermelon (freshly ripe !ne $ova watermelon (freshly ripe !ne "eedless watermelon (freshly ripe !ne air pump (bi%e tire pump style &ata table (given !ne funnel tip for air pump &uct tape Hypothesis: ' thin% that the "ugar #aby watermelon will be the first to explode. Procedures: ( )hose one of the three watermelons to test. * Ta%e the watermelon and set it on solid ground. (+x: a table, the ground, etc. , Ta%e your air pump and connect the funnel tip on the end of the tube connected to the pump. - 'nsert the tube about half way into the base of the first watermelon being tested. There should be no way for air to escape. 0 'f there are openings, cover them with duct tape. +ach opening should be completely sealed off. 1 !nce you have gotten that far, lift the handle on the pump and then push it bac% down. 2 +very ten pumps, record the changing observations for the watermelon in the data table given.
