526 Child-Based Research Reflection

The child-based research article that I chose to review focused on the effectiveness of sensory integration in children with autism during early childhood. I focused on this area because I was interested in investigating sensory integration and the parents perceptions of occupational therapy. I really enjoyed reading this article because it discussed interventions that were consistent with parents values and family centered care. These are two very important aspects to consider when working with the pediatric population. Based on this article, therapists need to develop goals and interventions that include the goals and concerns of the parents. Parents and children should be asked questions that relate to the world in which they live in. This article highlighted the significance of understanding parents expectations of their children and therapy. These expectations and desires may be a crucial influence of how therapy impacts the childs life. As a future therapist who is interested in working with the pediatric population, I will use this research as a reference when providing family centered care and understanding the perspective of parents perceptions of occupational therapy and how it influences children. Even though this article was based on sensory integration, I think it would be appropriate to relate it to parents with children with different disorders other than sensory integration dysfunction. Personally, I think that any type of research on family centered care is a positive resource.
