The petitions sent by Dr. Lenin, Convenor of the Peoples Vigilance Committee on Human
Rights drawing attention of the Commission to the plight of Ghasia tribals presents a
very distressing picture. If the allegations are true, the matter requires urgent attention
by the authorities as precious human rights of the tribals are alleged to have been
violated.
A copy of each of the petitions be sent to the Chief Secretary, Government of Uttar
Pradesh, Lucknow for examining the allegations and sending a report to this Commission
within six weeks.

xan Rights (PVCHR). He
ded that the matter had
been intimated to the Nation-
al Human Rights Commis-
‘sion (NHRC). On the basis of
the complaint, the NHRC had
asked the UP government to
look into the matter, he said.
According to Dr Lenin, the
families are surviving on poi-
sonous grass and wild mush-
room for the last four years.
“The adults somehow man-
aged to survive, but the little
children were unable to tol-
erate it and succumbed to
death,” he said.
‘Though after the NHRC’s
intervention, food was cis-
tributed to the affected fuini-
lies, they needed land for sur-
vival. He said that about 40
NGOs in eastern Uttar
Pradesh had launched a
movement to press the de-
mand for land for the Ghasia
people.
Nai Basti, a settlement of
almost 50 households of Gha-
sis adivasis is located on the
‘Highway about 8 km from the
district headquarters. Ac-
cording to Dr Lenin, about
four years ago these adivasis
had migrated from village
Markudi of Robertsganj
tehsil in search of livelihood.
Maricudi, Chiroi and several
other villages of Nagwa
block are the most backward
