643 Systematic Review Reflection

Kangaroo Care is a topic that I am very interested in. After much deliberation, Jessica and I decided upon this topic based on similar interests in future research. I have always been interested in working with the pediatric population and have an interest in working in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This is one emerging population that occupational therapists are serving along with other disciplines. Kangaroo Care is an intervention that is a cost efficient, safe, easy ,and can be implemented in multiple settings. It is also holistic, clientcentered, and is within the occupational therapy scope of practice. Our focus for our systematic review was on the effectiveness of Kangaroo Care on pain in preterm infants. I was very surprised on the amount of research that was available on this topic. After researching this topic, we came to the conclusion that all research was statistically significant in Kangaroo Care in decreasing pain in infants. Additionally, this intervention is helpful in bonding opportunities for families. The research we found concluded that not only is Kangaroo Care recommended for mothers, but it is also recommended for fathers. After conducting this systematic review, I have become very interested in working in the NICU setting.
