Subject: Science Grade: 6-12 Topic: Plastic Egg Genetics NJCCS: Science 5.3.2.D.1, 5.3.6.D.3, 5.3.8.D.

2 Objectives: SWBAT introduce words such as dominant, recessive, homozygous dominant, homozygous recessive, heterozygous, genotype, and phenotype SWBAT understand the concept of genetics using Punnett squares SWBAT exploit the worksheet given to further understand the importance of genetics SWBAT make real world connections using real life experiences through prior knowledge.

Materials: plastic colored eggs, baskets, worksheets, color beads to go inside the egg, Promethean board Anticipatory Set: I would start a conversation about who can roll their tongues. Students would survey each other. Input: Using the anticipatory set, I would have the students drive the conversation about how this phenomenon occurs and see what they believe is true. Model: Using the Promethean board, I will introduce the vocabulary words. Each vocabulary word will have an example to have them further understand. Once everyone is at the same page, I would introduce on how to determine the probability of a specific gene using Punnett Squares. As usual, examples will be given for different genes. The worksheet will be given out and the students will have to work in groups of 3. The eggs will be given to each group and I will model how to proceed with the activity. The worksheet will have a key on top that shows the genotypes and phenotypes of each color. Check for Understanding: Throughout the lesson, I will use group signals to see if the students are understanding the material. When I have started the second part of the lesson about Punnett Squares, I will have students come up and do the examples on the board. The worksheet will also help assess the students. Guided Practice: Throughout the activity, I will come around the classroom to ask questions to each group to assess their understanding. Closure: I will review the vocabulary and go over the activity as a whole. Independent Practice: Students will have additional worksheets about Punnett Squares.
