NUCLEAR POWER

Charles Hosea

HOW IS NUCLEAR POWER GENERATED?

WHAT FEATURES ARE NEEDED TO HELP PROTECT THE PUBLIC FROM A POTENTIAL MELTDOWN?
Ensure that heat generated by the reactor, including heat

generated by the decay of fission products after reactor shutdown, is removed.

Containing fission products to prevent offsite health effects. Water is used to cover the core to provide cooling so that it does

not overheat.
Control rods also provide cooling to the fission products so they

dont overheat.
Decay heat must be continually removed.

WHAT IS DONE WITH USED NUCLEAR FUEL?

Most used nuclear fuel is safely stored in specially designed pools

at individual reactor sites around the country.

Nuclear fuel elements are discharged and cooled down in a water

pool for up to 50 years at reactor sites.

WHERE IS THE CLOSEST TO SLC, UTAH?

There is currently a nuclear power plant in the University of Utah.

Blue Castle Holdings Inc. is trying build a nuclear power plant

near the Green River, Utah

HOW EFFICIENT IS NUCLEAR ENERGY?

Fossil fuels give off gases into the atmosphere such as carbon

dioxide but nuclear energy is considered to be cleaner and does not give off those kinds of gases.
Nuclear energy can produce one times more power than fossil

fuels and that is why it is used today.

The only problem is that if nuclear energy is exposed to the

environment such as plants, human beings, and other living things without proper equipment, it may damage it.
