Friction Lab

Name:___________________
Block ______

Introduction:
What is friction?________________________________________
_____________________________________________________

Hypothesis:
Which ramp surface will allow the ball to move the farthest?
____________________________________________________
____________________________________________________
Materials:
text book

white board

car or ball

meter tape

different surfaces (foil, bubble wrap, carpet, paper)

Procedures:
Step 1. Build a ramp with the white board and text book. Describe
the surface of the ramp and record description in the data chart.
Step 4. Cover the ramp with the first surface (teacher will tell you
which one). Describe the surface of the ramp and record the
description in the data chart.
Step 5: Place the ball or car at the top of the ramp. Let it go. Measure
how far down the ramp (or even off the ramp) the car or ball moved.

Step 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the other surfaces.

Step 7. Compare the distances the ball or car moved over each
surface.
Data:
Surface material

description

Distance car/ball
moved

Analysis:
On which surface did the ball or car move the farthest?
___________________________________________________
On which surface did the ball or car move the least? ___________
____________________________________________________

Conclusion:
Reread your hypothesis. Was it proven or disproved?_____________
