NEW DELHI: Apple's super slim and light weight MacBook Air notebook may get a Retina display model this year. According to a report by Digitimes, Apple will launch new models of its MacBook notebooks including a MacBook Air with Retina display, in the second half of 2014. The publication cites Taiwan-based suppliers as the source of the information. Apple doesn't offer a retina display model for the MacBook Air, at the moment. The 11.6-inch MacBook Air sports a resolution of 1366x768 pixels while the 13.3-inch Air comes with a 1440x900 pixels screen. Apple's MacBook Pro notebooks come with a retina display with the 13-inch version sporting a resolution of 2560x1600 pixels and 15.4-inch model featuring a resolution of 2880x1800 pixels. Shrinking a high resolution display and reducing the notebook's weight while keeping costs in control, would possibly be the challenges that Apple would face while working on a Retina display equipped MacBook Air.

The rumour comes shortly after a report that suggested that Apple is planning to launch an all new 12-inch MacBook Air with a radical redesign. The new version of MacBook will reportedly come without the cooling fan, which indicates that it will be ultra-thin and light in weight. The Digitimes report also quotes some other unnamed Taiwan-based suppliers as saying that MacBook shipments in 2014 are likely to drop by about 15% from 12 million units in 2013 to 10 million units or even 9.9 million units. It adds that shipments in January-February 2014 were as expected; however, Apple has significantly decreased shipments in March. It also mentions that Apple will launch the long rumoured 12-inch iPad in the second half of 2014, with Quanta Computer manufacturing the device for the Cupertino giant. Previously, a number of analysts and publications have suggested that Apple is testing a 12-inch+ iPad.
