Thordarson 1 Silaine Thordarson Problem Statement There are many real world problems that are of concern in our

modern world and the topic I will be talking about is oppressive government. Looking at this broad issue, it can be seen that oppression can occur in many ways, but I will be focusing on the denial of rights such as habeas corpus and privacy. These intrusions by government require an investigation because when the greater power of government infringes on human rights it gives them the power to jail people without trial or spy on citizens, leaving rights at the side. I propose that we encourage legislation that would inhibit the power of government entities to oppose democracy. As long as government power is kept at arms reach, it will be simpler to keep the entities in check.

Questions: What defines government oppression? How can fundamental human rights be ensured? What methods can be used to alter an oppressive government into a proper governing body? Who should spearhead the attempts to rectify these issues? The civilians? The existing government? Outside governments?
