Win to: Easts Blue Player of the Day: John Hay

Game Report:
New skipper Paul Cottam lost the toss and Easts were put in on a dampish looking
track on an overcast day. The loss of an early wicket was not, however, a sign of
things to come, with Neil Carey and Bernard Rose putting on 60 for the second
wicket. With the third wicket partnership taking the score to 91/3 in the 22nd over,
the innings was set up for a reasonable early season total. After a middle order
stagger, which also saw top scorer Rajeev Varma dismissed for a well-compiled 44,
Tony Gray and John Hay were able to hit out in the last seven overs, adding 41 for
the seventh wicket. Easts were able to post a competitive 186/7.
Marist made a good start facing the medium pacers (using an older ball) for the first
nine overs without losing a wicket. The introduction of the first slow bowling pair,
Tony Gray and Greg Topp, started to see chances being created and the run rate
slowing. Their combined sixteen overs produced 3 for 53. Full value was then
gained with the second slow bowling pair, David Hearn and John Hay, who sent the
Marist innings into a terminal tailspin. John bowled full and straight, claiming an
impressive 4 for 22 off his seven, Even his first over caught and bowled miss wasn’t
costly, with the opposition skipper dismissed later in the over. Their thirteen overs
saw five wickets fall for 42 runs, and the game was effectively over with several
overs remaining.
A fine first up win for Easts, reclaiming the Holland Cup and introducing several
new players to the team.
