PSYCLES

GROUP SHOW
22-31 DECEMBER 2013

THE WHITE HOUSE PLETTENBERG BAY

PSYCLEs
This group exhibition is an investigation into the mechanics, patterns, rhythms and forms that exists within our known Universe.
As the title suggests, Nature is made up of cycles; some of which can be observed quite literally, while others exist within the unseen paradigms of space-time, as well as the seemingly innite expanse of the Human psyche. In many ways Humanity (and the Universe), is a composition of sentient loops; manifesting in traditions, instincts, habits, cultures and mutations. Are we a closed and predictable system? Or are we a multi-dimensional spiral of trajectories - evolving and furthering the mystery of Life? The artists will be exploring this territory of creative inquisition, revealing fresh insights and interpretations of cyclic/psyclic states of being...

My paintings are abstract meditations on nature. Nature is self-similar similar patterns appear over and over again, at different times, in different places and at all different scales. By abstracting the common features found in these natural patterns, it is possible to create archetypal forms that have both essential and universal qualities. What is essential to nature is also essential to us. In my work I explore the imperfect symmetries, boundaries and innities found in our world. The paintings are radiant, often monochrome and aim to create harmony in elemental patterns that are nely balanced between order and chaos.

03

Biography My work as an artist is strongly inuenced by my background in physics, maths and computing. I studied Astrophysics at university (London) and then went on to do research in Elementary Particle Physics. I worked at CERN in Geneva, where the scientists use particle accelerators to study matter at very high energies and on very small scales in order to better understand the fundamental nature of the universe. I started painting at the beginning of 1998 and I soon found that painting offered me a new way of looking for truth in nature and of exploring the relationship between consciousness and nature. I moved from London to Cape Town in late 2011. The spectacular natural beauty of the Western Cape is a source of great pleasure for me and it has already had a signicant inuence on my work.

Christopher Crawford Denovan

Chris Crawford Denovan is a painter working in Cape Town, South Africa. Born and raised in Cape Town he grew up in a very liberal, loving and relaxed family. As a child he showed promise as an artist when he won the certicate of Merit for Art in 1998. His mother and father encouraged him paint and to relate to the world through art. He enrolled in Ruth Prowse School of Art and acheived the highest aggregate in the class of 2003 and 2004. In 2005 he graduated from the Ruth Prowse School of Art with a Diploma in Fine Art. For his graduate body of work and dissertation he chose to focus on Portraiture dipicting Prejudice, Discrimination and power relations in gender and ethnicity. Interested to incorporate motion graphics into his art Chris, in 2006, began studies in animation at The Animation School. In 2007 he won the Best Concept for New Characters prize and graduated with two internationaly recognised certicates in Maya 3D essentials and 3D studio Max. From 2008 to 2010 Chris worked as an animator and background artist in the 2D animation studio; Clockwork Zoo. In 2009 he was promoted to head of the backgrounds department for international shows such as, Florries Dragons, Caillou, Happy Valley and Mr Bebe.

13

Wanting to focus fully on his Fine Art career, Chris in 2011 became a full time artist and since then has been working on developing his own personal style through experimenting with different painting techniques.

Artist statement I dont set out to produce art about one subject or another. Although I am intrinsically draw to capturing the human form and condition. Im never without a sketchbook to hand so I am constantly drawing and sometimes the drawings are left in the sketchbook and other times they develop into more in-depth ideas and detailed images. Recently I discovered some childhood drawings: simple, crayoned patchworks that resonated deeply with my soul. Inspired and invigorated by a renewed sense of continuity, and awed by the mystery of how creation occurs, I am always searching to create art that has at its core the creative spark of ones inner child. My art styles develop and evolve over time. People always ask for my artist statement so I needed to do one but Ive never liked to explain a certain piece of work - if youve made a picture and thats how you wanted it to be - hopefully it can speak for itself and whatever it says to the viewer - its the right message because there isnt a wrong and a right message. Each

person takes something a little different from the same picture and Im happy with that.

Inuences My inuences are rst and foremost everything I see, feel and experience, but Ive always loved comic books particularly work by the Perry Bible Fellowship and Sam Kieth. I love architecture particularly Art Deco. The artists I most admire are Edward Keinholz, Dana Schutz, Ben Grasso, James Elkin, Gerhard Richter, Luc Tuymans, Marlene Dumas, Chris Oli, Jenny Saville and always more. I grew up watching lms such as Metropolis, Flash Gordon, Star Wars and animated lms by Studio Ghibli. c.c.denovan@gmail.com 082 445 4244 https://denovan.see.me/ http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4011533/lmotype http://www.stateoftheart.co.za/art-by-chris-denovan/148 /chriscrawford.denovan

About my work This Series of work is entitled Frieze of LifeA Poem about Life, Love and Death. Inspired predominantly on Edvard Munchs December 1893 series by the same name. The series of work Munch created was centred around the cycles of life incorporating themes such as: Love, Loss, Jealousy, Melancholy, Anxiety, Puberty- from innocence to old age, the stages of life and the hopelessness of love, and separation in life and death. My intention is to translate my own personal experiences of these themes through the vanitas (symbolic work) of Dutch and Flemish Still Life paintings but in a contemporary fashion. The Latin term Vanitas can be translated as vanity, or transience, and is understood in Dutch and Flemish still-life painting of the 16th and 17th centuries with symbols like skulls, smoke, hourglasses, insects such as ies and butteries, and many types of owers. These contrasting symbols underline the contradiction between life and death. On the one hand describing the pleasures of the esh, and on the other alluding to the inevitability of its decline and ending.

Birth of Metabolism

Essentially Birth of Metabolism stands as the start of life, the difficulties of birth and the fragility of who we are as physical beings.

A Pubescent Storm

Mixed Media (Oil, enamel, acrylic) on board 30cm x 30cm

Is a work that describes the complex state of youth. The Lily and buttery is a symbol of Virginity, purity of mind, transformation and resurrection while offset shadows and a broken shard from an unknown object work in opposition creating an aura of angst, and hints at something shattered.

Mixed Media (Oil, enamel, acrylic) on board 30 x 30cm

17

Love for Ash and Roses

Is my interpretation of Munchs story of the hopelessness of love. The Rose, Old Photograph and Burning Candle symbolises Passion, the Unattainable and Transience while Ants, Ash and dying Cigarettes symbolise Hard work, Desire and Loss.

Moonlit Melancholy

Is a story of reection. Munchs iconic Moonlit reection over water symbolises the memories of ones life over time. The Columbine ower is a image of Melancholy while the Boat and scattered Photos represent distance.

Mixed Media (Oil, enamel, acrylic) on board 30cm x 30cm

Old Age Vampire

Talks about the end of ones life and how we may see death as standing on ones doorstep or coming up from below. We can either accept it with a scenes of ease and coolness or with fear.

Death in the Sickroom

As the title suggest this is a painting is about Death. The Poppies, Moth, Hour Glass and the Scull, half buried in the ground, are all Dutch and Flemish Still Life symbols of Death.

Mixed Media (Oil, enamel, acrylic) on board 30cm x 30cm

Mixed Media (Oil, enamel, acrylic) on board 30cm x 30cm

19

The Afterlife Bridge

In this painting I wanted to capture Munchs depictions of bridges as a passage way from death to either heaven or hell. The musical instrument is a symbol of Heaven while the dark shadow on the opposite side of the bridge symbolises hell. The dragony and cloud lled window both stand of transience of being.

I work in and on anything I can get my hands on truthfully, making use of found objects and various paint and mark-making mediums. Chance holds a rm presence in my work. Inspiration Art is everywhere, manifesting itself on every imaginable time scale, and is constantly changing. Every form, living and non-living, by its mere presence or lack thereof is resonating some form of art simply by existing. Beauty is that very existence. I nd inspiration and beauty in what Mother earth displays to us constantly on all time scales and on the various levels of our perceptions. The laws of chance surprise us constantly with aesthetic treats and delights that play with our every sense. And of course the magic of the found object is but a gem and a seed that stimulates our imaginations. I work in mixed media at the whim of the days inspiration and let the picture develop itself through me hands and tools and in the true style of the loop-da-loop this very process inspires me. In the words of Tom Robbins Dreams dont come true,.they are true.

I am an artist based in Woodstock, Cape Town. Im originally from Pretoria where I started studying a BA in Psychology at UP. Midway through my degree I diverged from the path of academia and found myself studying cookery in Ireland and then volunteer work in the Amazon jungle of Peru. Upon return I ventured into studying various styles of massage, which brought me to Cape Town at the beginning of this year where I am currently studying Reexology and completing my degree through UCT. I have only recently rediscovered the soul nourishment that is to be found through creative expression, and how to play within this space. oh.laughter@gmail.com 079 243 8058

Inspiration Ive always been quietly drawn to sacred geometry and symmetry, and the balancing effect it can have on a psychological and spiritual level. Inspiration is drawn mostly from nature- the plant and animal kingdoms and the lessons that they hold, as well as our own multilayered vibrational anatomy. These lessons are interwoven within human experience, and as we all exist as one, we are an echo of the same underlying patterns and rhythms, expressed in innitely different forms. The style of my work intends to capture our intricate vibratory make up- that our solidity is an illusion, and that each particle has a vital role to play in creating the greater manifestation, the blueprint and vessel for that which is more than the sum of its parts.

Rory Bullock
Rory is an Irish Artist born in Belfast 1984. Educated until the age of 18 in Belfast, he then moved to Scotland to study, graduating 2008 with a Masters in architecture. During this time he was solidifying his style and opinion in architecture, painting and sculpture. Practice of art has been a constant part of Rorys life. Exhibiting consistently since 2007 I feel I now have a clearer understanding of my own work, how it relates to me and the world Existentialism is a recurring theme throughout his work, understanding life as a journey. His works record place, people and a mindset. A unique perspective inuenced by living through and observing the end of The Troubles (a time of social division and unrest in Northern Ireland). Emphasizing the existence of himself as a free agent determining his own development through acts of will.

4 + 4 = 8; the number of innite possibilities (or so I am busy discovering) Prior to completing my degree at the Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT) I did Industrial Rope Access (rigging) whilst traveling the UK and Southern Africa. Traveling made me constantly aware of the changing landscapes around me and in trying to nd moments of stillness (rest) within the landscape, I re-established a childhood connection with the earth. These moments installed a erce environmental awareness within me. Although I majored in sculpture, my rigging inuence remains a strong part of my art making process as I build suspended three dimensional installations; often comprising of the things I collect during my travels (moments, images, objects, and thoughts). Marrying 4 years of industrial rigging with 4 years of art school.

Motivation I create installations because I want to share my thought and feelings; The uncapped beauty of the Earth captivates and inspires me.

Earth Series This series was born after a six month work trip in Namibia. It started with a triptych entitled Maandlandskap (Moonlandscape) exhibited as part of the group show called Walk this Earth Alone. Thereafter Earth (cycles 1 & 2) was created for an exhibition at the Green Expo (CTICC) entitled (eco) nversations which accumulated in me making Earth Blue as a private commission. Most recently, I made Earth; the Seasons/the Elements for a group exhibition at the Lovell gallery called Pieces & Puzzles; compositions of human expression Inspired by Nature. They have now extended to include a total of 10 works (existing and non-existing; as I often deconstruct (recycle) work to make new work out of them.) They are about deserts, greenness and water (emptiness, newness and healing). About connecting with the Earth (like-in falling down and hitting the ground hard - and then getting back up again). About changing with the scenery and nding Home in the landscape around you.

My motivation is to sincerely share my enjoyment, and reverence for existence and art. In sharing I hope to extend beyond my own vision and capabilities and join a resonance of creative living. Motivation My inspiration struck when I fell in love for the rst time. Awed by the magnicence of existence, and the beauty of life, I wanted to become the creator of my life; in order to share the feeling of empowerment. I was then immediately confronted with that strange relationship between what is, and what could be, and the myriad of choices, dimensions and variations it brings. I feel we have all shared the realisation of what our purpose could be in life, and a discussion of our different approaches will possibly bring to light valuable insight. The themes I have chosen to represent this relationship betweenwhat is and what could be are Nature and Creativity respectively. I have represented Nature realistically, to capture its nite quality. Nature is the source of my greatest comforts and fears, as it is both the gift of life, and the certainty of death (or vice versa). Nature at once takes away as well as gives. Oddly I experience this balance as either extreme or mundane.

I have represented Nature realistically, to capture its nite quality. Nature is the source of my greatest comforts and fears, as it is both the gift of life, and the certainty of death (or vice versa). Nature at once takes away as well as gives. Oddly I experience this balance as either extreme or mundane. Nature is also our physical form and our genetic inheritance. Despite the variations that this body provides, there is ultimately no other choice than this particular body, which needs care and sustenance. Secondly, the concept of Creativity, is represented by the supernatural qualities of my painting: gently oating gures, unworldly dimensions and inverted proportions. Creativity, in my life, rst occurs as an abstract leap of faith. Patience, imagination and courage lead me to open doors to the unknown. I have left the gure incomplete, to represent my creative curiosity and to encourage questions. Creativity, in my life, has been an exercise of pure choice. On the surface the themes are at odds with one another. The surreal relationship between them barely settles together, and yet these combinations illuminated a deeper understanding of my emotions. I became aware of the similarities, as opposed to the differences, between Nature and Creativity. Both Creativity and Nature allow us to leave a legacy. Both require us to gamble, sometimes against better judgement. Both offer satisfaction that is hard to nd elsewhere, and both require

courage, selessness, and collusion to ensure survival. It is my belief that an appreciation of the creative aspect of Nature, and the natural aspect of Creativity brings about a more balanced outlook and lifestyle. It harmonises what we are made of with how we are made.
