Chromosomes not visible but their DNA has already duplicated

Chromosomes become visible early in mitosis The replicated centrioles move apart; microtubules of the mitotic spindle continue to extend from the centrioles

Mitotic spindle fully formed The double stranded chromosomes line up around the equator of the cell

Each centromere divides so that the single stranded copies of each chromosome moves to opposite ends of the cell as the tubules shorten

Division (a process called cytokinesis) New membrane begin to form around each group of chromosomes
