Ren Geronimo Favaloro was born on July 12th, 1923 in La Plata, Argentina. His father was a carpenter and his mother was a dressmaker. In 1951 he became a rural doctor in a very small town in La Pampa. He spent 12 years there with his wife, Mara Antonia, and his brother, Juan Jos, a doctor, too. In 1967, Favaloro became the first surgeon to perform bypass surgery on patients with heart problems. In 1975 he founded Fundacin Favaloro along with other collaborators. There, he trained more than 450 residents from all over Argentina and Latin America. In 1992 he opened an institute in Buenos Aires.
