Abstract The Filipino virtue of respecting the elderly has been witnessed to wane decade after decade. In this paper, we look at the story of an 85-yr. old woman who was caged and beaten by her own daughter and son-in-law. We highlight the slip in the pagkatao of these Filipinos in association with their probable principle towards life and death. By being impartial and only focusing on their personal justifications, we present the central beliefs of these people. We also delve into the issue of human and animal consciousness specifically, the idea encasing the mentally challenged in Peter Singers Animal Liberation. With the caged woman being incapable of defending herself and unable to think as it should be, we question how she is different from the animals.
