Artifact #1: A Conversation R.E.C.E.: Hello. My name is R.E.C.E. #1 from your childrens school. May I please speak with Child As parent? Mother: I am Child A and Bs mother. R.E.C.E.: How are you today? Mother: I am fine. Thank you. R.E.C.E.: The reason for my call is in response to Child As participation on the basketball team. We did not receive the signature on the permission form. We need your signature in order to allow her to play on the team. Mother: I cannot sign because if Child As brother is not selected to play then cannot allow Child A to participate unless Child B is also allowed to play. R.E.C.E.: Is there any particular reason that Child A cannot play without Child B? Mother: In our culture we cannot let the girls go out without being accompanied by an immediate male family member. R.E.C.E.: Ok. So if Child B is allowed to be a part of the team than would you sign Child As consent form? Mother: Yes. That would be fine. R.E.C.E.: Because of your special circumstances I would like to discuss this possibility with our gym teacher. May I call you back later? Mother: Yes. NOTE: Once the special circumstances have been discussed between the gym teacher and the R.E.C.E. they agree to let Child B be a substitute player on the basketball team so that Child A does not miss out on the opportunity to participate in the team experience.
