Fred Hollows was born on the 9th of April 1929 Dunedin in New Zealand. Fred was 1 of 4 children. His brothers were John, Maurice and Collin. He went to Palmerston North Boys High School. His parents were Joseph and Clarice.
He contributed to the Australian people by helping the Indigenous people. He fixed their eye sight by living and working in the outback.
Lots of people had a better life because they could now see.
Interesting facts
Hollows was a New Zealand citizen until he became an Australian citizen in
1989.
He helped start training programs for doctors to do eye surgery in Nepal and
Vietnam.
He fixed over 60,000 indigenous peoples eyesight. Hollows initially began to study to become a Priest. He died in Sydney in 1993 at the age of 63 years old.
The foundation began to help give eye care to the poor and to help improve
the health of Aboriginal people.
Awards
In 1981 he received an Advance Australia Award for Aboriginal eye care. In 1990 he received a Human Rights Medal. In 1990 he was named Australian of the Year. In 1993 an area in a rainforest in NSW was named the Fred Hollows
Reserve.
