Early life

Born to parents Joseph and Clarice Hollows in Dunedin in New Zealand. One of four children. LEFT New Zealand at the age of 7. He travelled to England and won a prize as one of the top students. He became a doctor and specialised in the treatment of diseases of the eyes.

He married Gabi OSullivan in 1990.

What contribution did Fred Hollows make to Australia/the world?

Red Hollows helped set up the Aboriginal Medical Service in Sydney and arranged for teams of people to travel all over the country to treat trachoma. In 1971 Fred Hollows, Mum Smith and others set up an Aboriginal Medical Service in Redfern Sydney and he was officially the founder for the establishment of medical services for Aboriginal people throughout Australia Fred Hollows visited Nepal in 1985, Eritrea in 1987 and Vietnam in 1991. He started teaching training programs for the local technicians to perform eye surgey. He organized LOL laboratories in Eritrea and Nepal.

Why did Fred Hollows take this path in his life?

He found people were going blind and he could restore their eye sight. He wanted to make a difference to many people.
