LESSON: RotationsELA Skills OBJECTIVES: SWBAT recognize and correct shifts in verb tense through grammar exercises.

. SWBAT demonstrate the use of various verb moods through a partner quick write. SWBAT differentiate between broad and narrow scope through the analysis of an epistolary novel. SWBAT engage in independent learning through silent reading. PROCEDURES: 1. Check vocabulary skills. (8 minutes) 2. Teacher explains what the rotations will be. (5 minutes) 3. First Rotation: Silent Reading (Individual). Students read the class silent reading book, Forged by Fire. (15 minutes) 4. Second Rotation: Scope (Teacher and Small Group). Students read letter excerpts from The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Teacher asks questions about scope: What is scope? What makes a broad scope? What makes a narrow scope? What makes you say that? Small-group discussion. Teacher tells students to label each letter excerpt with a broad or narrow scope. Students put letter excerpts in order from the broadest, to the narrowest scope and explain their choices. (15 minutes) 5. Third Rotation: Grammar, tense shifts and verb moods (Partner). Students work in pairs to continue their work on verb tense shifts and verb moods. They will do grammar worksheets along with creative writing. Prompt projected on SMART Board. (15 minutes) 6. Ticket out the door, on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the best, 1 being the worst, how comfortable do you feel identifying the range of scope and how comfortable do you feel identifying shifts in tense? (2 minutes) MATERIALS: Textbook Copies of Perks excerpts Silent reading books Student notebooks Copies of grammar exercises ASSESSMENT: Grammar exercises Scope review STANDARDS: RL 1: Cite the textual evidence that supports inferences drawn from the text. L1c: Form and use verbs in the indicative, imperative interrogative, conditional, and subjunctive mood. RL9: Analyze two or more texts on the same topic. W9: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. SL 1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly. L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing.
