In Canada no federal legislation around inclusion of children with special needs Varies from province to province In Ontario

school age children guaranteed right to education preschool is preferred practice but not guaranteed

resource teacher may consult rather than be on staff

Same ratios apply as for children without special needs No legal obligation but do have a duty to accommodate Home daycare - count as child under 2

Child: What will be different for the child? What skills does the child have that he can use? What skills does he need?

Family concerns:

What services & supports will be available? How will the child adjust? What changes in daily routine will be required?

Small group exercise

Last week we met Jared & Travis, two four year olds with Down Syndrome. Next September they will be attending a half day kindergarten program in the local school. Choose one of the children to focus on. What steps should be taken to ease the transition between programs.
