For making adequate designs for bank protection works in bends, a proper understanding of the flow in bends and the resulting bed topography is required. Changes of the river planform and of the cross-sectional shape, and changes in the river morphology due to sedimentation and erosion cause deep scour holes along the outer bend of rivers. This is one of most difficult topics encountered by river engineers, the main difficulty being the description of the helical flow and its impact on the channel bed. Changes of the river planform and of the cross-sectional shape, and changes in the river morphology due to sedimentation and erosion cause deep scour holes along the outer bend of rivers. As a consequence the outer bank in a bend may fail during a flood, potentially causing substantial damages to property and infrastructure located along these outer banks. Aerial view of Ucayali River, Peru (2004) Over the last decades the understanding of physical processes in mildly curved bends has improved substantially. However, in many rivers in the world - including many of the rivers in Peru - sharp bends are present and the phenomena in these bends have not been explored in depth until now. River bends are considered sharp when the ratio between radius of curvature R and the width B is less than 3. The objective of the present investigation was the study of (i) the flow and the bed topography and scour in sharp river bends with dominant bed load transport and (ii) the influence of bank protection works in the outer bend in a laboratory flume. The objectives of the study included the determination of maximum scour in front of the outer bank for equilibrium conditions. To reduce the complexity of the problem some constraints to the scope of the research were imposed. In the flume a constant width was used, the banks could not erode, the bend was strongly curved (R/B = 1.5) and the boundary conditions are constant in time. Tests were carried out under the conditions of mobile, fixed and partial-fixed bed and no sediment was supplied from upstream (hence clear water scour was studied). Both tests with and without bank protection works were carried out. The experiments in a sharply curved laboratory flume were conducted to provide adequate test material for the study of bend scour in sharp river bends and in a future for its application in a mathematical model. Bed topography was measured on quite some detail and the evolution of the different cross sections over time was studied as well. The scour and point bar formation was studied by making them dimensionless using normalized water depths. Other aspects studied include: the transverse bed slope, the water surface and bed level profiles, the thalweg location, and sediment transport and bed forms. Regarding the flow characteristics the bend flow parameters, velocity profiles and velocity contours, lateral flow component and secondary cells were studied. The study of turbulence flow was considered to be treated later. The experimental investigation is rendered feasible by the availability of a 3D- and a 2D Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). Next the measured response of the bed topography in a sharp river bend was analyzed using the analysis of flow and bed adaptation by Struiksma et al (1985), and it is concluded that the approach is not applicable under conditions of vanishing sediment transport rates and high curvature conditions. The apparent 3D flow conditions in sharp bends are quite different from the quasi-2D flow conditions, on which the Struiksma analysis is based. The measured transverse slopes were fairly well in accordance with the prediction method of Odgaard (1985). In the experimental set-up also the influence of bank protection works along the outer bend was studied. Two types of bank protection were studied, notably a flexible and a rigid bank protection made both of crushed rock. A revetment of rock (simulating a rockfill revetment in nature) was modelled as a flexible bank protection and a horizontal rockfill slab connected to the outer bend wall was conceived a rigid bank protection. During the experiments both the rockfill revetment and the horizontal rockfill slab were placed at different vertical positions with respect to the bed level in the bend. The impact of the protection works on the scour depth and on the flow pattern were observed and analysed. The rockfill revetment tests were complemented by an analysis of the slope of the revetment formed after the scouring along the outer bank of the bend.
