Patterns and trends in audience- Cinzia Labbadia- Media Homework

2009: 2009 was an extremely successful year for cinema due to UK cinema visits reaching 174 million which is the highest year for admissions since 1971 causing the UK box office to grow to 944 million which is partially due to the arrival of 3D. Avatar is one of the most well-known successes for the box office in 2009 due to it generating more 3D takings than any other 2009 film. Other well-known films which caused the audience numbers to rise in 2009 include: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Slumdog Millionaire, Sherlock Holmes and St Trinians 2. In terms of independent films, they were criticised for not having many genres and focusing on drama however, they still took 45% of the box office due to the success of Slumdog Millionaire.

Over the last 10 years, the total number of releases has risen and the proportion of specialised films has increased from 58% to 69%.
