Jaime Jones Reflection 6 SE 591 Winter 2014 On Monday, March 24th, I spent an hour observing in Meagan deBruins ASD

D classroom. Her seven students are in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. On this day, I observed a writing and spelling lesson. In addition to Mrs. deBruin, there are two paraprofessionals who were working in the classroom, Ms. Joshua and Ms. Succoro. I entered the room at the end of a writing lesson. Students were completing graphic organizers. Mrs. Succoro and Meagan were circulating and helping students to complete their organizers by asking questions. When the timer went off, students were asked to put their organizers into folders and get their snack. Students went to the snack cabinet only when the teacher opened the cabinet. After snack, four students went to the general education classroom. The remaining students came to the table to work on spelling. Mrs. deBruin introduced the words, had students clap the syllables, then had them sound out the word and spell it. She checked the students spelling and made correction immediately, as necessary. One thing I took away from observing this lesson was the importance of having students count syllables. I tend to work on syllables separately from spelling, but spelling is the perfect time to practice this skill. The lesson observed addressed many competencies, but specifically competency 1, 2, 3, and 4 were displayed.
