in 1937 and is an award that recognizes the preceding years most distinguished American childrens picture book. The Caldecott Medals is one of the most prestigious medals a long with the Newbery Medal. The criterion encompasses every aspect of the book but intensively focuses on illustrations as they relate to the story. The committee selects the picture book that is most effective as a childrens picture book. The criteria for the Caldecott also includes, artistic technique, how the visual aids accompany the story, theme, or concept, as well as how the illustrations parallel the story. The accolade is to the illustrator of an American published picture book in English and the recipient must be a citizen or resident of the United States of America. The awarding authority for the Caldecott Medal is the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC).
