Tiger Tools Case

Tiger Tools is a division of Drillmore Industries that was launching a new product. Their production manager asked an assistant to check the capability of the oven used in their manufacturing process. The assistant obtained 18 random samples of 20 pieces each to calculate if the process was capable based on a specification width of 1.44 cm. The analysis found that the process seemed to be cycling, as a control chart for smaller sample sizes revealed. Taking larger samples combined results from different process means, hiding changes. Smaller, more frequent samples made patterns easier to see. Since the problem could be corrected, process variation and capability would increase, with the capability index greater than 1.33.

Case Extracted From

This case Tiger Tools is extracted from

Operations Management, William J Stevenson, 9th Edition, TaTa Mcgraw Hill, Chap 10, Quality Contro, Pg: 487-488.

Relation to Content with the chapter

This case is related to Control chart for Variable.

Where sample range approach is used to

measure of process variability. Range control chart used to monitor process dispertion.

Brief Outline of the case

Tiger tools is a division of Drillmore Industries.

They were trying to lunch a new product

Production Manager asked her assistant to check

the capability of the oven used in their process He obtained 18 random samples of 20 pieces each. He had to calculate whether process was capable based on a specification width of 1.44 cm or not.

Analysis
The process seems to be cycling, as indicated by

the control chart for the smaller sample size. Taking large samples probably resulted in combining the results of several different process means, and therefore did not reveal the changes that were occurring. By taking smaller samples more frequently, the pattern was easier to separate.

Since the problem could be corrected, the

variation would decrease and hence the process capability would increase. The Cp will be greater than 1.33. Small samples may not be sufficient to represent the population as a whole. Though there may be some findings in small samples that large samples might not project, the larger sample is the proper representation of the entire behavior / process. Hence, a large sample should be taken to arrive at more accurate result.

Conclusion
We got a better idea about the application of the

concepts such as quality inspection, recall, trade in process. Also, we got to know about the application of the statistical concepts and the importance of computing process capability index.
