History

The Harlem Renaissance was the flourishing emergence of African Americans. Originally called The New Negro Movement, the Harlem Renaissance started in the year 1919 and ended in 1940. It was a movement that shifted African Americans from the South to the urban North. During this time period, many African Americans showed their ability through art, music, and theater. The Harlem Renaissance was not only an artistic movement but one for African American equality.

Langston Hughes was an extremely prolific writer who was one of the most well-known poets of the Harlem Renaissance. He was born in 1902 in Joplin Missouri. Early in his childhood, Hughes parents divorced and his mother had to work for the family. Hughes was raised by his grandmother who sparked his interest in literature. After high school, he settled in Harlem, New York where he started his career

Political/Social Impact
The Harlem Renaissance was the first period in history where African Americans expressed themselves through art, literature, and music. This movement influenced many future writers such as Robert Hayden and Gwendolyn Brooks. There were many social movement during the Harlem Renaissance as well which influenced the perspectives on African Americans in the future. The movement also allowed African Americans to be selfsufficient and become a larger figure in the American society.

The literature, art, and music of the Harlem Renaissance was the most influential aspect of that time. There were many significant works of art that changed history such as the musical Shuffle Along which decreased racial stereotypes and paved the way for African American theater. Writers during the Harlem Renaissance expressed their identity and heritage through books and literature which gained a national audience for the first time in history. Well known faces of the Harlem Renaissance were Duke Ellington (musician), Langston Hughes (poet), Aaron Douglas (painter), and Charles Gilpin (actor). There were also many famous works of art and literature from the Harlem Renaissance such as Langston Hughes poem From Mother to Son and Palmer Haydens painting Jeunesse.
