Philosophy of Education

My personal views about learning and education have been influenced by many different theorists. A few of those theorists are Jean Piaget, Howard Gardner, and Lev Vygotsky. These theorists have great theories that are very different but to me somehow intertwine together. I do not believe that there is one right theory and one wrong theory. As an educator there are many different bumps that I come along when working with many different children. These bumps maybe family issues, housing issues, or even social/emotional/physical/cognitive issues. When trying to figure out how to help these children learn best, I look at any theory I can to help and learn myself. Also as an educator I continue my learning through my students. Learning from them every day shows that I am willing to learn and they should also be willing to learn. I believe that when children are born, they are very eager to learn and grow. They come into this world knowing certain things as grasping and sucking, but as they grow the environment that they are in depends what else and how they learn. Being surrounded by a nurturing, safe and welcoming environment only shows the child how much they really can do. I feel that when a child is in a hostile or unsafe environment they cannot be the best they can be. Also as an educator it is my place to make sure that every child that I come into contact with has a great experience with me. I also feel that I need to do the best I can to teach them what they need and want to know in the time period I have with them. I feel that they need opportunities to learn themselves without my help. As I continue my career as an education I plan to grow and make changes to my environment, curriculum and beliefs on learning. It is my job to empower children to learn and feel as if they do and be who they want to be in life.
