Its like bein a caterpillar in a cocoon(288). In childhood Jem felt comforted by the people around him in Maycomb. He was safe and blissfully unaware of the class system and inequality that divided the citizens of the town.

Racial Injustice

Gentleman

I never wanta hear about the courthouse again (331). Jem is so upset with the verdict and the fact that the jury still found Tom guilty that he wants to pretend it never happened. Hes realized racism trumps reason.

Atticus is a gentleman, just like me! (131) Jem sees that being a gentleman is being kind, selfless, and responsible like his father,Atticus.

Our father didnt do anything (118). Jem doesnt see his father as a gentleman at first because he isnt active and young like other fathers. But he learns what makes a gentleman.
