The Romulus City Council has approved a change in voting Precinct 12, which will relocate from the closed Merriman Elementary School to the Romulus Athletic Center (RAC).
The RAC is located at 35765 Northline Road at Wayne Road – within the same, current outlined boundaries of Precinct 12.
The Romulus Election Commission recommended the location change after studying all options. City Clerk Ellen Craig-Bragg said the RAC will provide plenty of parking spaces and more room inside the polling location, In addition, she said, the building is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Michigan Election Law requires that any establishment, move and/or abolishment of a polling place be done not less than 60 days before an election, which makes the deadline June 6, 2014. A statewide primary election is scheduled for August 5. (The voter registration deadline is July 7.)
This week, the City Clerk’s Office will notify by postcard all registered voters affected by the precinct move, Craig-Bragg said. Residents in Precinct 12 will soon receive new voter registration cards as well.
Craig-Bragg said other locations were considered by the Election Commission, including other schools, but parking would be limited at Halecreek Elementary School, which would be a factor for elections with large turnouts, and Barth Elementary School is near railroad tracks, which could affect transportation to and from the polls.
Mayor LeRoy D. Burcroff, who serves on the Election Commission, said the Romulus Athletic Center can provide a separate building entrance for voting and plenty of room for election workers and those campaigning for election.
“We looked at all possibilities,” Cragg-Bragg said. “We want to make it convenient and we don’t want to have to move again. The Romulus Athletic Center is a good, solid location and a very positive place.
