Phillis Wheatley, an African American woman, published her first poem in a New England newspaper when she was about twelve years old. The Boston Massacre occurred, where tempers flared between the Patriots and the British to the point where British Army soldiers killed five male civilians and injured six others. Mercy Otis Warren published anonymously a series of satires that attacked the Royal Governor of Massachusetts. War breaks out at the Battles of Lexington and Concord and marks the start of the American Revolutionary war. The Ladies Association of Philadelphia was formed by Esther De Berdt Reed. Deborah Samson, one of the few documented women enlisted in the army, served 17 months in the army of Uxbridge, Massachusetts. At the Battle of Yorktown General George Washington defeats Cornwallis's Army, causing the British to surrender and effectively ending the American Revolutionary War.
