THE SEGREGATIONIST SOUTHERN STATES

HISTORY
Before the Civil War, segregation existed both in the North and the South. There was no need to separate whites and blacks because 95% of blacks were slaves.

In the North legislation combated segregation.

In the South segregation prevailed unabated from the 1890s to the 1950s. The struggle against Nazi racism in Europe called attention to racism in America.

JIM CROW
The name Jim Crow is often used to describe the segregation laws.

The term Jim Crow originates back to 1828 when a white New York comedian, performed in blackface his song and dance that he called Jump Jim Crow. The most important Jim Crow laws required that public schools, public accommodations, and public transportation, have separate facilities for whites and blacks.
