The Epic of Labaw Donggon

FORMALISTIC APPROACH: The Epic of Labaw Donggon talks about a polygamous hero who fought various beings in order to marry the women he wanted. He married three women in his quest. The names used in the story were very traditional in nature basing from my unfamiliarity of the names used. Knowing that the epic of Labaw Donggon came from the Visayas, it is easy to say that the culture of the people from Visayas could be reflected from the story or epic. Basing from what Ive seen from the epic, it is apparent that Visayan people would fight for their loved ones. Labaw Donggons two sons (from his first two wives) went out and freed Labaw Donggon from the hands of Saragnayan. Another trait which was apparent in the epic was that Visayans tend to love deeply, as shown by the two wives of Labaw Donggon when they sacrificed themselves to replenish Labaw Donggons damaged mind and body. The epic was a reflection of the Visayan culture, from the names of the characters up to the main story of the epic. The Visayan culture could also be seen from the traits of the characters themselves as described in the epic.
