Chameleon Sight Words (Hide Clyde!

)
Objective The students will practice reading and writing site words. Standard: 0.3.0.3- Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words a. Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-toone letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary or many of the most frequent sound for each. b. Associate the long and short sounds with common spellings (graphemes) for the five major vowels. c. Read common high-frequency words by sight. d. Distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the sounds of the letters that differ. -1 blank chameleon for each student. -Crayons. -Black marker. -Tape. -Recording sheet. -Lean back to the story Hide Clyde. Talk about how Clyde could change colors. -Show a bit from chameleon YouTube video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMT1FLzEn9I While showing video explain and point out the color changes. -Explain that today they will be creating their own chameleons. Directions for chameleons: -Students will write a sight word on their chameleon first in pencil then will trace it with black marker. -After they have written their sight word they will find a place to put their chameleon and color it accordingly. For example if the student would like to put their chameleon on a gray cabinet they would color their chameleon gray. -Students then will tape their chameleon to their

selected surface. -Once students are done placing their chameleons explain that they will now be going on a sight word chameleon hunt. -Hand each student a recording sheet. -Have students record 5 sight words. Closing -Gather as a group and have students share where they hid their chameleons and what word they put on their chameleon. The evaluation for this lesson will be the completed record sheet and chameleons made. The point of this lesson is for practice so completion is key.
