Coastal and Floodplain Engineering

Homework #1

A developer has asked you to determine the peak discharge into a narrow stream within a
38 acre parcel of land to be developed for single family homes. Attached is an aerial
photo of the existing site (scale 1 = 418ft), a current topographic map (scale 1= 1421ft),
and a site plan for the development. Soil type is 60% B and 40% C. Use the 24-hr
100-yr return period rainfall for New Brunswick, NJ in your analysis.
1. For the undeveloped condition, calculate the appropriate curve number (CN), time
to concentration from the Red dot on the aerial photograph, and the peak
discharge for the parcel.
2. For the developed condition, calculate the appropriate curve number (CN), time to
concentration from lot highlighted in Red on the site plan, and the peak discharge
for the parcel. Note that the run off enters a gutter and a 2 ft dia. concrete storm
water pipe located at the corner of the property (grey line). Assume the pipe flows
full.
3. Assuming that each lot has the same discharge, what is the total discharge for the
development?

492.42 ft

Weibull Equations and = 0.4.
