Proposed Project: Smart Cane for Visually Impaired Persons with Facilities of Obstacle Detection and Guidance from Map

Objective: There live about a million people in Bangladesh, who are not bestowed with the blessing of visual power. This natural impedance immensely limit their movements. Although most of them use a cane, they often fail to realize what lies forth. That is why we plan to make their cane more efficient in object detection. Again, blind people encounter hardship in going somewhere new. They either need a companion or have to rely on the advices of fellow passers-by. Its time they had a trusted friend in the roads that would give them directions when needed. Features: A buzzer that would warn the user about an obstacle in a certain threshold distance The threshold distance can be varied; one does not need to be warned about a man 1m away in a market, but while jogging, he sure needs that warning. Provision for map input from a computer. A software will convert google maps in microcontroller readable program and that will be loaded in the cane circuitry using serial communication. The cane will automatically measure how much the user has walked and at every cross-section, it would remind him which way to follow from there, reading information from the map An emergency switch that would buzz as well as blink to attract attention or seek help if the user is in any trouble at the road

Future Development: We are hopeful about completing this project within the remaining time of the term. But in a 13 week course time it might get difficult for us to develop it any further. But we do not intend to stop the development of this project right at the end of the term. Rather we expect o add features like guidance at road-crossing, one click SOS, public transport detection etc.
